Welcome to my Porsche 993 build article. If you’ve been following my YouTube channel (Rennthusiast) then you know that I consider my Porsche 993 as being the best car I’ve ever owned, and at last count, I’ve been fortunate enough to have owned over 60 cars.

And, if that’s not enough, my 993 is not only the best car I’ve ever owned…it’s also my favorite 911 out of the 3 I own. At the time of writing this article, I own a:

• 1986 Porsche 911 3.2 Coupe in Guards Red
• 2007 Porsche 911 997.1 Manual Turbo in Guards Red, and
• 1995 Porsche 911 993 Manual Coupe in Polar Silver

And yes, the 993 provides the most rewarding all around driving experience.

With that being said, I have really been yearning to make the car even more exciting to me, and I have decided to embark on a project with the car. The overall vision for the project is to give the car a more aggressive focus with some nods to the 993RS, some weight reduction measures and some funky personalized color choices.

So, this build involves a fairly deep set of modifications – some cosmetic, some performance-oriented – and I thought I would share the decisions I’ve made.

Here they are:

Porsche 993 Build Mod #1: 993 Turbo bumper swap with US bumperette delete

Almost a year ago now (pre-pandemic), I bought a used US spec 993 Turbo bumper from a 993 Rennlister Facebook group member. I put the installation off because I was not yet ready to really dig into my Porsche 993 build. Because the seller was located in Las Vegas, it was a complete pain the get the bumper to where I live in North Carolina. We used Greyhound shipping, which I would not recommend. Took way too long. After a couple of months, though, it showed up was as described.

The bumper was in need of several repairs:

• The portion of the bumper adjacent to the undertray had been clearly curbed and as a result had a long crack in it that would need to be plastic welded.
• Because it was US spec, the bumper featured the US bumperette cut-outs, and I figured I would get those filled in order to convert the bumper to euro spec since it would need plastic welding anyway.

As you may know, the turbo bumper also requires turbo scoops, foglights and euro corners, all of which I sourced from various places.

The turbo scoops and bulbs I got from eBay. I normally shy away from eBay for car parts because of quality and fitment issues but in this case a friend of mine had used them successfully, so I felt comfortable with them.

The corner signals I sourced from a Rennlist seller.

I love the turbo bumper look and am excited about the visual impact this change will make along with the uniqueness it will give the car.

Mod #2: Porsche 996 Hard Back Sport Seats w/ Tartan Centers and Contrast Stitching

A cornerstone of this Porsche 993 build will be the seat upgrade in the car.

I have always loved the look of tartan seat centers in an old school Porsche, so I knew that part of my 993 transformation had to include doing this mod.

Initially, the plan was to rework the factory Porsche 993 comfort seats by replacing the original leather with new leather and replacing the centers with tartan. My existing seats are in exceptional condition so this would be an easy, no brainer solution for the seat cores.

However, I was super excited to randomly find some used 996 hard back sport seats removed from a 996 turbo for sale on eBay for $2500 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. And, luckily enough, I have a contact in the air cooled community located nearby who was willing to go take a look at the seats, make the purchase for me and then ship them to my shop in Porsche performance shop in North Carolina. Talk about luck!

I’ve selected a mostly-blue tartan fabric that mirrors a Patrick Motorsports build and that I think will play well with the polar silver. I will incorporate that into the door cards and will also have red contrast stitching matching the color scheme incorporated into the leather.

I’m quite excited about this component of the build and while tartan isn’t necessarily exactly “correct” for the 993, it’s what I want and I think it’s going to look great.

Mod #3: Fister Stage 3 Sport Exhaust

If you’re a 993 enthusiast then without question you have heard the name Darren Fister of FD Motorsports. FD Motorsports makes KILLER 993 upgrades and I have already been running several of them prior to making the decision to modify my car even further.

When I bought my 993, it came with a Fister Stage 2 sport exhaust. I have shared in previous posts and videos that the exhaust note produced by the flat 6 993 engine in combination with the Fister Stage 2 is THE best exhaust sound I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. It cracks and pops just right but at the same time is totally “daily-able” without being annoying.

So, when I made the decision to take my car in an even more aggressive direction as part of this Porsche 993 build, I knew that I wanted to step up the exhaust by bumping up to Stage 3. I have heard Stage 3’s live and in person so I know that I’m going to enjoy it. Yes, my neighbors may get a little irritated but the truth of the matter is you can contain the sound by keeping the revs lower and being less aggressive with the throttle…until you get out of the neighborhood (LAUGHING FACE).

The really nice thing about this mod is that I’ll get a hefty core credit when I ship my Stage 2 back to FD Motorsports, so this upgrade will be remarkable inexpensive for the enjoyment I’ll get.

Mod #4: DAS Bolt-In Rollbar

Ok, so this is admittedly a little bit overkill and is a mod that I have gotten some negative feedback about in my 993 upgrade videos.

I don’t plan to track the car enough to require this mod, but I do think it will enhance the stiffness and handling performance which is definitely in alignment with where I want to take the car. It adds a performance/motorsports vibe to the look and feel which jives with the

The downside of adding this rollbar is obviously the added weight and the obstruction it will create in the rear view mirror. I will also lose the use of the backseat which frankly isn’t a problem for me as I almost never carry passengers in the car.

At the end of the day, this mod is totally reversible which is part of the reason I am trying it out as part of my Porsche 993 build. I also got a solid deal on it so I feel good about the fact that I can remove it and sell it to recover my money. So, it’s a win because I like the look, idea and marginally enhanced performance…and it’s also a win because I can recoup my money if and when I decided I want to remove the rollbar.

Porsche 993 Build Mod #5: Grey German Square Weave Carpet In Charcoal Grey

Ok, so first of all, removing the factory carpet from the Porsche 993 is a complete pain in the ass. Porsche elected to use more glue in the 993 than in any previous generation of the 911 and as a result, removing the factory carpet is a tedious, labor intensive process. Thankfully the shop is doing this work.

Bigger picture, the motivation for removing the factory carpet was to replace it with something a little more exciting than the standard issue, expected, predictable black carpet. Now, I know the purists out there think this is a travesty…to speak ill of the carpet that Porsche installed in the 993. And, to be fair, I have to admit the factory carpet is strong quality and holds up well. However, I just found – for me – that I wanted something a little different from what you find in every other 993, so I chose the German square weave in charcoal grey.

Porsche 993 Build Mod #6: Porsche 993RS Steering Wheel

I have been running the Porsche 996 3-spoke steering wheel for about a year. I love the ergonomics of this wheel but was seeking something a little more unique to align with the direction of the build.

Earlier in my Porsche 993 build decision-making process, I believed I was going to go with the Momo Mod07. It’s a more “modern” looking and feeling version of the Momo Prototipo (which I love and have on my 1986 Porsche 911 Coupe) but one night while perusing the Rennlist classifieds – which I do daily – I tripped over this really clean 993RS wheel. So, I figured that since I already have the Momo on my other air cooled 911, it would be cool to go in another direction with my 993 wheel.

Admittedly, I don’t know a lot about this wheel and frankly need to learn more about the Porsche 993RS in general…but I can say I do appreciate the look and feel of the wheel as well as the fact that it has 993 heritage.

Porsche 993 Build Mod #7: Rear Seat Delete

Deleting the rear seat in my 993 is something I’ve always wanted to do.

Given that I am replacing the carpet, installing a rollbar and replacing the front seats it’s a no-brainer to delete the rear seats.

This move has several layers to it.

• I love how it looks in other 911’s that I’ve seen. It gives the car a motorsports/weight reduction feel which aligns with the direction I’m taking the car.
• With the rollbar installed, I can’t use the back seats anyway, so why not do it?
• The German square weave carpet I am having installed can easily be patterned to appear to have the factory rear seat delete so it should look completely intentional

But wait! That’s not all! There’s More To This Porsche 993 Build!

These are only the first 7 mods I’m making to my 993. I’ve decided to make 7 more substantial changes to the car, and will be revealing the second set of 7 in my upcoming “Part 2” video on this topic. I’ll also publish an article laying them out.

My initial budget for this build was $10,000. At this stage, I have exceeded that amount but it has definitely been because of mods I’ve added to my 993 project. It could have been kept lower, but I keep figuring, “you only live once.”

Another way I’ve been looking at it is that thankfully, my Porsche 993 is mechanically sorted. It’s a GREAT, solid candidate for this kind of project because it runs well and that’s always the most important thing to take care of: making the car mechanically road worthy, safe and up-to-date on maintenance.

My 1995 Porsche 993 Coupe in Polar Silver is the car that started my love for air cooled Porsches.

Without question, the 993 brings the best of air cooled into a package that includes relatively modern conveniences as well as the peak of the performance that could be achieved from the air cooled flat six engine. And, of course, there’s the gorgeous design.

But if you’d rather read, then read on to understand the 10 reasons I absolutely love this car.

Reason #1 I Love My Porsche 993 Coupe: The Interior Layout

The first reason I love my 993 is the interior layout, as simple as this is. If you’ve ever sat in a vintage Porsche 911, then you know the way the interior flows is absolutely unmistakable…and the 993 is no different.

When you get into a vintage 911, the first thing you’ll notice is that the face of the dashboard is very utilitarian. There’s nothing there that you don’t need and only what you do need. The gauges are amazing, the button locations are kind of quirky, and the controls aren’t necessarily always where you think they should be. But, in my opinion, that’s part of the charm.

And that’s what I love about the 993 (and really all air cooled Porsche’s): the fact that the interior design really supports the idea that these are driver’s cars…and I’m a driver.

Reason #2 I Love My Porsche 993: The Fister Exhaust

The 2nd thing I love about my 993 is the exhaust note. In my case, I’m running a Fister stage two exhaust, and I have to say, this is THE best exhaust note I’ve ever been able to achieve out of any car I’ve owned (and I’ve owned a lot of cars across a lot of different brands).

When the car showed up on the delivery transport, it was much louder than it is today. The previous owner had installed a Fabspeed X-pipe on the car in addition to the Fister stage 2 exhaust, and frankly it was just too much. I mean, it almost sounded like a muscle car.

So, after living with both exhaust mods for a bit, I pulled the X-pipe off, and sold it on Rennlist Marketplace for $1,000. I was pleased about that. At this point, I’m just running the Fister stage 2. It is, quite frankly, badass. In fact, Fister’s exhaust work is so solid, I’m going to upgrade my Stage 2 to a Stage 3.

Bottom line: if you own a 993 and are considering an exhaust upgrade, I strongly recommend you look at Fister’s exhaust offerings.

Reason #3: The Bilstein PSS10 Coilover Suspension

I absolutely love the suspension set-up on this Porsche 993 911. I am running Bistein PSS10 coilovers on this car, and they were not cheap to put on…but they were worth every penny.

As I recall, these coilovers cost somewhere around $4,500 installed.

In my opinion, though, the PSS10 coil over upgrade for the Porsche 911 993 is the single best mod that I have ever done to any car I’ve owned.

There are 2 reasons I say that:

• Putting the Bisltein PSS10’s on the 993 gave a vast improvement in handling and performance. The car feels much more planted and has this unbelievable go-kart feeling when you’re going through twisties. Because of this suspension set-up, the car is incredibly confidence-inspiring so I’m not afraid to push this car through the mountains at high rates of speed. I did run the stock suspension for a while. In fact, I went to a road rally with the stock suspension on it and I drove the car in a spirited way..and of course, the car did stick. Obviously straight from the Porsche factory it’s going to be very capable, but it did have a lot of body roll going on. When I put the PSS10s on the car, that was eliminated.
• The second reason I think that the PSS10s are so fantastic: I love the lowered look and I love just how tight my 285 rear tires are to the fenders. I love how it gives the car a more menacing, performance-inspired look. It’s one of those things that causes you to just keep looking back at the car as you walk away from it in the parking lot. And if you’re reading this, I know you can relate.

Reason #4 I Love My Porsche 993: The Smells

So reason number 4 that I love my 993 (and this is going to be a little bit odd…but if you are a Porsche guy or a Porsche gal, you’re going to appreciate this) are the smells you experience when driving and being around these cars.

When you get into one of these older air cooled Porsches, it hits you: the oil smell and the smell of old leather.

As I shared with you earlier, I’ve owned a lot of cars in my obsessive car buying, collecting, experiencing and selling “career,” and there’s just not been anything quite like the smells of an old 911. My 1986 Porsche 911 Coupe has its own unique smell, but it’s different from the 993. So as difficult as a smell is to share with you in a blog post, I’m not going to be able to do it so you’ll have to just trust me when I say it’s a very unique feature of these 993s.

Reason #5 I Love My Porsche 993 Coupe: The Compact Size

The fifth thing I love about my 993: the compact size.

Long before the days of the GT feel of the 991 was a time when the 911 was small…and while the 993 is larger than the cars that came before it, it’s still small enough to feel very tossable.

You kind of lose sight of just how small it is when you’re driving it regularly. It really hit me when I picked up my 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo. I picked it up from a seller about 6 hours for me. I drove that car home so I had a ton of windshield time in that car, and when I got home I immediately jumped in my 993. I was experiencing air cooled withdrawal. When I got in the car, it really did feel like a little go-kart. It felt so much smaller.

So it’s so compact. It just gives you that nostalgic sense of this is how these 911’s used to be back in the old days. And yes, they became a little bit larger through each generation. And I’ve not driven a brand new 911 yet, but I can only imagine that this 993 would feel so much smaller after getting in one of those newer cars.

So I love the size of this car.

Reason #6 I Love My Porsche 993: The Gearbox

The 6th thing I love about the 993 is the gearbox.

I’ve published quite a bit of content on the 915 transmission that I have in my ’86, and obviously that’s a very, very different transmission in many ways than is in this 993.

With regards to the 993 G50 derivative, the shifting action is so clean and so nice to drive. My 993 does have a relatively new clutch in the car, which I’m sure helps the overall feel of the transmission. Bottom line, the clutch engagement point is so tight and the gears shift so well that it’s just like butter.

As an item of interest, my Porsche 993 Coupe is running a FD Motorsports golden rod (another great FD product) as well as a short shift kit, which is what came on the car. So, in fairness, I can’t really tell you what it felt like coming stock, but I can tell you that I just love the way the gearbox shifts. There’s nothing quite like downshifting it, rev matching it, and punching it.

Reason #7: It’s A Higher Mileage, Driver-Quality Example

The next thing I love about my Porsche 993 Coupe is that it is a higher mileage example that’s not in pristine condition. It is a driver quality car. Now there are some issues with the paint and a couple of cosmetic things with the car that have been bothering me. I did a video on that topic, talking about paint issues, cosmetic issues and seal issues that I’m experiencing with it. So it sounds a little bit like a paradox. I love that it can withstand stone chips, but I kind of hate that there are paint issues.

But with all of that being said, I have fallen into the trap in the past of wanting and owning garage queens, and there’s something so freeing about having this 993 with 110,000 miles on it that I can just take on back roads, follow buddies closely, and have stones flying at me without being worried about it.

So, if you’re thinking about getting a 993, I really would not overlook higher mileage cars as long as they’re well-documented. There’s something fun about just using the hell out of this car the way it’s intended to be used.

Reason #8 I Love My Porsche 993: The MY02 Wheels

I absolutely love the wheels that I’ve selected for this car.

My particular example came with stock 17″ Cup 2 wheels. Of course they’re period correct for the car; however they’re not my favorite look for the 993. I do have buddies who run them and who love them. I simply don’t think that they look as good as an 18″ wheel does.

So one of the first things I did is after buying my 993 is to keep an eye on the PCA classifieds until I found a set of MY02 996 wheels for sale. The nice thing about the MY02s is they are 18 inches, they fit the 993 right out of the box, and they’re also super reasonable in terms of how much money they’re going for used.

So, that’s just my personal preference (MY02 wheels) but that’s reason number eight that I love my 993.

Reason #9 I Love My Porsche 993: The Gauges

The next thing I love about the 993 are the gauges.

The gauge look and feel are certainly not unique to the Porsche 993 Coupe. It’s an air cooled thing, and I just love those round gauges and how they lay out across the dash. They look very vintage and there’s just something really appealing about that, at least for me personally. When I first got the car and I got over the disbelief that I actually had bought one of these, my eyes were just drawn to the gauges.

Now for a little bit about my gauges. I have taken a little bit of flack in my video comments about tilting my 993 gauges. People ask me why I’ve done it.

By tilting the tach I can see the red line a little bit better out of my peripheral vision, which is helpful when you’re hammering on it and you really need to keep your eyes on the road while at the same time monitoring the revs.

And the reason I had the speedo turned is because at highway speeds, when it is cocked correctly, the 70, 80, 90 mark is hidden by the steering wheel, so it’s hard to keep an eye on your speed.

Reason #10 I Love My Porsche 993: Air Cooled Porsche Culture

The final reason I love my 993 is the air cooled Porsche culture it introduced me to.

I have experienced many different brands in many different car cultures, but this one is very, very unique. The people involved in this group are very passionate about these cars. There is an underlying belief that these cars are meant to be driven and experienced, which I love.

And also there’s this very cool, mysterious vibe around modifying…and of course there’s the whole vintage end of things with the deep and rich history Porsche has. I just love the air cooled Porsche culture and community. If you haven’t been to an air cooled Porsche event, I strongly recommend you check it out.

Ok, so there you are. 10 Reasons I Love My 993. If you’re considering getting one of these wonderful machines, don’t wait. Get one now!

I have always bought my vintage, “special cars” from private sellers. For better or worse, I have always believed that you buy the seller and I much prefer the lower-pressure, relational type of deals that come from buying private party vs a dealer.

That said, buying private party is obviously not a foolproof way of safely picking up a 911. While I have found the Porsche community (air-cooled especially) is mainly comprised of honest, passionate owners, it’s like anything else in life. There are for sure unscrupulous sellers out there looking to maximize profit on subpar examples.

So, I thought I would share 3 questions I like to ask early on in the buying process that help me decide whether I have a car worth pursuing or if I’m dealing with a shady seller.

Before I jump into the questions, though, here’s some food for thought.

I recently polled my viewers to see just what kind of experiences they’ve had when buying a Porsche 911 from a private party. Below is what I asked and as you can see, I got a total of 111 responses. While I don’t pretend to be a professional researcher, I do believe this sample size is large enough to have some validity.

Question: If you bought your Porsche 911 from a private party and you think back to your buying experience and the honesty/transparency of the seller, how would you respond to the following?

The seller was honest and the car had zero surprises – 30% of respondents selected this option
There were 1 – 2 small “gotchas” but overall I’m happy – 56% of respondents selected this option
I got burned and it cost me a lot more to get the car right – 14% of respondents selected this option

So, if poll respondents were being honest (let’s hope they were), then roughly 1 in 3 deals went swimmingly. That’s higher than I would have thought, to be honest. The reason I say this isn’t because I doubt that people have honest intent. It’s just human nature. If someone knows they’re selling their 911, the likelihood of them putting more money into it is just lower.

Regardless, my findings give us ⅔ deals leaving the seller with some level of disappointment. Just more evidence suggesting that developing your skills around interviewing sellers can only be a good thing.

So, here are the questions.

Question #1: “Would you mind telling me your reason for selling?”

This is a no brainer question, right? Asking this is a standard operating procedure, or at least should be, but here’s the insider “sub-tip” for this question:

Ask the question then shut up. Let them talk. Don’t turn it into a conversation. Just be quiet and listen.

What’s the voice inflection like? Genuine? Or are they a little nervous? Too self-assured? The way they tell the story can be just as important as the content.

Also, you’re going to want to re-ask this question much later in the buying process so take detailed notes to refer back to. Basically, you’re going to want to see if the stories line up when you ask them to walk you through it again later on down the line.

Sometimes – and this is a universal truth – if someone is deceitful, they may forget the story they’ve told and details won’t match. Also – and this is something you’ll really, really want to uncover – if the seller is slick and feels like they’re reeling you in, you’ll start to hear “oh yeah, I forgot to mention _____ needs replacing…”

Question #2: “So, will you miss this 911?”

The car I want is the one where it pains the seller to get rid of it. The car that an older owner is selling only because he or she can’t manage the clutch any more due to knee issues, for example.

When you ask this question, you get a feel for whether there was a real emotional connection between the car and the seller. Was the car treasured and cared for, or is it something that was purchased, neglected, then sold to get out from under a lien or to extract some cash to dump into a new BMW?

What your tolerance is for how the car you’re evaluating was viewed by the seller is a very personal decision. For me, I’m strange about this type of thing. I want the car I’m buying to almost have been a member of the family. I want there to have been genuine affection for the car because quite frankly, it will enhance my joy in buying the car (if it checks out) and it also leaves me feeling good about the maintenance history.

Question #3: “If you were going to keep this 911, what else might you do to modify or improve it?”

The answer the seller gives to this question can also reveal how the car has been used and treated.

If the seller tells you that he/she would make track-focused improvements (however light) that tells you the car may have been at a minimum taken to DE events. Not a deal-killer, but if you hear this type of answer and you haven’t heard anything about DE events in the backstory, that could be a yellow flag.

If the seller tells you that he would possibly be replacing suspension bushings or doing a top end in the next 10,000 miles, it could be that he’s potentially aware of some pending maintenance that may have not been disclosed yet. Dig deeper.

In conclusion, the main takeaway here is that you want to dig in – politely, of course – and understand the backstory of a car. It’s a great feeling when the story remains consistent and the seller is honest about the good and the bad. Frankly, when a deal is really GREAT, you may just find you become friends with the seller long after the deal has been done. That’s happened for me.

Perhaps you’ve decided you want an air-cooled Porsche because they were hot when you were growing up and you always wanted one. Or maybe it’s because you’ve got a buddy or 2 who owns one and you’ve decided you want to get out and roll with them.

The truth of the matter, though, is that unless you have some level of experience with buying these cars, it’s really, really easy to get hurt financially if you don’t do your due diligence before pulling the trigger on the purchase.

So, based on my experience, I thought I would put together 5 tips to help you as you pick up your first used Porsche 911.

Tip #1: Be realistic with yourself about what your ownership experience is going to look like.

First and foremost, you need to make sure you’ve gotten your mind right for what vintage Porsche 911 ownership is going to look like. The ownership experience is massively rewarding and the good news about these cars is that they are actually pretty bulletproof once they’re sorted. The bad news is that it’s going to cost you money and time to get the car 100%. That’s just the way it is. Rare is the vintage Porsche that’s being actively offered for sale that needs nothing even if it’s being marketed as such.

If you’re the OCD type who really wants everything to be perfect on the car, then prepare to pay up significantly for a truly turnkey car that’s cosmetically perfect and has zero mechanical issues. After all, the “newest” air-cooled Porsche is now 22 years old and many of these cars see a lot of use. Garage queens do exist, but you’re going to have to pay a premium for one.

Tip #2: Find an independent air-cooled Porsche shop local to you before you buy the car.

Think ahead. Are you savvy enough to work on one of these cars yourself? If so, congrats. If not, I would recommend finding a local independent Porsche shop capable of working on whatever variant you’ve landed on owning, and do this before you buy the car. If you can’t work on the car yourself, you will DEFINITELY need a good, honest, competent shop.

You’re going to want technical competence and honesty around labor rates and billing. Trust me when I say that you want to feel really good about your mechanic when he basically has an open checkbook when he’s troubleshooting some pesky “gremlin” going on with your car.

Finally, notice I said “independent.” I have always avoided working with Porsche dealers (or any dealers for that matter) when it comes to vintage cars I own. I have found dealer techs who truly understand are few and far between and I have had a great deal more luck with independently owned and operated specialty shops,

Tip #3: Dig HARD into problems, issues, and the desired preventative maintenance required for the specific year/generation of the air-cooled Porsche you’re looking at.

As great as these cars are, each generation has its’ own issues and Google is your friend.

Whether you’re dealing with the need for upgraded Carrera chain tensioners in a 78 – 83 Porsche 911SC or the seal leak issues in the Porsche 993, you’ll want to know what you’re in for.

Any solid seller will have either gotten this work done themselves or will have ensured the work had been done when they bought the car. Or, in an ideal world, the seller will disclose any work that will be required in the near future. If the car needs the work, do your best to get that discount baked into the sale price or simply get comfortable that in order to experience the joy of owning the car, you’ll need to come out of pocket for the amount of the repairs.

There are many GREAT forums and Facebook groups focused on specific generations of air-cooled Porsches and any questions you have about the car you’re seeking have been asked before. Do yourself a favor and do your homework. It’ll save you cash and the agony of nasty surprises later.

Tip #4: Remember that you’re buying the seller as much as you’re buying the car.

This little truism can mean the difference between buying a car that brings you trouble-free joy for many miles following the purchase vs. buying a car that immediately drains your wallet thanks to surprises that may have been actively or passively hidden from you.

In my personal experience as well as based on what I’ve seen in the marketplace, most air-cooled Porsche 911 buyers and owners are true car enthusiasts and as such, have bought and sold many cars in their lifetimes. So, for the most part, I have seen that both buyers and sellers have a positive transaction when passing along an air-cooled Porsche from one to another. The seller has loved the car but is ready to move on and the buyer is savvy enough to ask the right questions and make a good deal for both.

However, there are flippers out there who buy low, repair only the most glaring issues, then try to sell the car for at or above retail. Getting to the bottom of what type of seller you’re dealing with is an article in and of itself so I’m not going to go there, but basically, use your instincts.

Tip #5: Never, never, never, never skip the PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection)

So, after months of looking you’ve FINALLY found the car you’ve been looking for. The seller “seems like a nice guy” and he has “other buyers ready to make a deal today” if you don’t move ahead and buy it. If you’re like me, the last thing you want to do is slow down the deal by asking for a PPI. You want to wire the money and freaking DRIVE your new toy ASAP!

And that’s the way first-time air-cooled Porsche buyers get hurt.

The reasons for overlooking this vital step are many:

• You’ve been looking for a long, long time.
• The color and spec you want are uncommon and they don’t come around often.
• This car is special and you don’t want to lose it.
• The seller “seems” honest.
• Etc.

But basically what you’re doing is talking yourself into a potentially painful situation based solely on emotion. And, once the initial joy of gain is over, the agony of rushing the process – and paying thousands, if not tens of thousands – of dollars for surprise repairs is with you for a long time.

If you’re in the financial position to withstand (potentially) thousands of dollars of surprises and skip the PPI, then just own that and move ahead. Frankly, I’ve done that before. It’s been rare and the stakes have been low, but I try to avoid it at all costs.

The concept of a PPI, what to look for, how to get one done at a distance, and how much you should pay for it deserves several articles/videos in and of itself. The key takeaway for you here is GET ONE DONE.
